I am a walker. I guess you would call me more of a trekker. I love long distance walking and when the opportunity came up to become a part of Houston’s Bike to the Beach with other organizations, I said “Why Not!” and signed right up.
The last time I was on a bike was 27 years ago. In fact, at this moment I don’t even have a bike that works! However, I am inspired. I am inspired by the opportunity to raise funds and create greater awareness for autism and other disABILITIES through Bike to the Beach. And I am even more inspired by our 10 Brookwood Citizens. These 5 men and 5 women are already training to ride 5 miles each on a tandem bike to raise awareness, as well as to raise money for Brookwood as members of the Brookwood Interdependence team.
At the end of the work day I can look out my window and see our Citizens riding their bikes around Fondren Circle — some on three wheelers, tandems, and two wheelers. Karen and Christine ride their side-by-side bike. Karen is blind, however she can pedal. Christine does not have use of her legs, however she can see. Talk about an amazing duo! What a great team! It is not easy….they are working hard….all of them with their own disABILITY…doing their best….giving their all….and they deeply inspire me. If they can do it, I can give it my best and ride too. They are my inspiration and why I am riding. I learn so much from them every time we are together.
We would love to have you join our team as a rider or maybe even donate to the Brookwood Interdependence Team (no contribution is too small!) Come join our team in any way you can and let our Citizens INSPIRE you!
